As I was out walking, one morning in Spring To see the green fields Hear the pretty birds sing I met a young maiden walking alone For I am a stranger and a long way from home I came from sweet England with mother and dad We thought in America all could be had
It must have been absolutely awful for the English people who left everything behind in order to start a new life in a country that hadn't even been discovered. I can remember going to another country and I was desperately wanting to come straight back home, I was so home sick. But to be so very far from home would have been bad enough, but then there was the terrible New England winter and the natives to endure. I have nothing but sheer admiration for my very brave ancestors.
